The Brian Clough statue - it's all systems go!

Most people who know me will be well aware of the fact that my biggest all-time hero is the late great Brian Clough.

For those who aren't familar with Cloughie, he was a maverick genius widely regarded as the greatest football manager of all time. This view is derived in the main from his astonishing success during 18 years in charge of my team Nottingham Forest from 1975 to 1993 - a period which saw him transform a team of has-beens and also-rans into European champions.

I could eulogise all day about Cloughie.

Indeed, though he sadly passed away in 2004, the last couple of years have actually seen Old Big 'Ead play as big a part in my life as he ever did - as I've been part of the group of fans who have been busy raising money to have a statue of the great man erected in Nottingham city centre.

We launched our mission in June 2005 with the target of raising £60,000 - and happily, after 18 months of hard work raising money through all sorts of stunts from the sublime to the ridiculous, we crossed the finishing line in December 2006.

With the money in the bank, we hoped we'd be able to get a statue commissioned pretty quickly. However, the last year has seen a frustrating one... a slow trudge through lots and lots of red tape.

But the last few months have seen things finally start moving in the right direction. And this week sees a major landmark in the campaign - with the announcement of which sculptor (out of three who were shortlisted) will be actually making the statue.

Needless to say, as someone who worked his arse off to help raise money for the statue, I'm incredibly excited... and I can't wait now to see the thing completed and unveiled!

With the chosen sculptor having produced a miniature of his design, I've already got a fair idea of what it will end up looking like - and I have every confidence that it'll be a fantastic tribute that'll hopefully help ensure the legend of Cloughie lives on and continues getting passed down the generations.

The joy of receiving luxury cheese through the post!

Last time I posted a few thoughts online, I was wittering on about Christmas presents  - and specifically, the fact that that we pride ourselves in my family on our ability to think of ace and imaginative gifts to buy for each other.

This Christmas, gold medal for the best gift undoubtedly went to my parents - who capitalised on my notorious love of cheese by buying me six months' membership of 'The Cheese Society'!

I duly discovered that this would basically involves me getting sent a parcel of luxury cheeses every month for the duration of my membership. And naturally, I was thrilled and excited!

I mean, we all love it when we get something through the post other than the usual drudgery of utility bills and whatnot, right? And if that 'something' happens to be luxury cheese - well, does life really get much better?

As it turned out, it actually does!

For this week, I received my first cheese consignment!

Now over the weeks that I'd anticipated this big moment, I'd imagined that each monthly delivery of cheese would be a small packet containing a couple of cheeses at most - and indeed, I would've been more than happy with that.

So imagine how cock-a-hoop I was, then, when the courier van turned up with a massive fuck-off box!

I knew what was in the box straight away, as it was branded with the logo of Paxton and Whitfield, the chain of cheese shops that are behind The Cheese Society (and, according to their company motto, purveyors of "exceptional cheese since 1792").

Naturally, my excitement was at fever pitch as I tore open the box, to find generous portions of FIVE different cheeses - a blue cheese, a gouda-style cheese, a camenbert, and two different cheddars!

What's more, the box also contained detailed 'biographies' of each cheese, including information on how each of them were made... and even recommendations as to the best alcoholic tipple to accompany them!

So far I've only tried one of the cheddars - but needless to say, a massive box of cheese arriving every month for the next few months is something I'm looking forward to getting used to!

Incidentally, the box with my first batch of cheese also contained a copy of Paxton and Whitfield's latest company newsletter, and it contained a piece of information that will amuse anyone who shares my love of inane music trivia. Yes, the company have just struck a deal to start selling a cheese made by none other than Alex James - the former bassist with Britpoppers Blur, and now a successful dairy farmer!

Surely this must be the most rock'n'roll cheese of all time?!
